Menopause is a perfectly natural phase in a woman’s life but is often not treated as such by mainstream medicine or pop culture. We’re taught to feel that Menopause- and the process of aging- is in fact a ‘failing’ of our bodies; an ailment that must be corrected by drugs and surgeries, be they synthetic hormones, antidepressants, diuretics, tranquilizers, Botox, breast implants, dermabrasion, liposuction- or worse.
Yes, of course this time of transition often brings with it numerous beauty and health challenges, depression, and a host of other physical, mental, and emotional challenges. We’d be lying if we pretended otherwise.
Our bodies and our minds are changing – and it can be tough watching our outer appearance change right along with our shifting inner hormones.
Some of us are better able to embrace these physical and emotional changes – yet, for others, the process of Menopause can be traumatizing.
Menopause is met unfavorably by our youth-driven culture, and is also very often misrepresented.
Magazines, film and television all glorify youth, and women in their prime are viewed in rather unflattering stereotypical ways: as sex starved ‘cougars’ that only have their genitals to offer a relationship, or as hysterical desperate, dried up women sobbing in their kitchens while their husbands romp with the hottie at the office.
Not terribly flattering. Who in their right mind would ever be able to find good in THAT?
It is indeed a crying shame in this country that we don’t honor women in their prime.
Good heavens, all you have to do is look around to find the Truth of the matter:
Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Diahann Carroll, Linda Evans, Helen Mirren, Suzanne Somers, Susan Lucci, Christie Brinkley, Iman, Bo Derek, Angela Bassett, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jamie Lee Curtis are no worse the wear, and these ladies are certainly never perceived as dried up old hags… so why on earth should you see yourself as any less!??
Granted, you may not have a movie star’s moolah to spend for personal trainers, private chefs, massage therapists, manicurists and facialists- but you don’t really need it…
You have US and we know ALL the secrets you need to know to be the best you can be now -and twenty years from now!
Rest assured, Menopause does not ‘just happen’. No woman on the planet wakes up one day to discover she is Menopausal- unless of course she has been chemically or surgically placed into the condition for medical reasons.
There is a slow, sweaty slide into Menopause, and it usually lasts anywhere from three to eleven years in most women.
Perhaps for several years, starting in your mid to late thirties, you misread -or completely overlooked- the telltale pattern of hormonal shifting: the periods that perhaps arrived earlier or later than normal, the cramps that twinged a bit more than they used to, the breast pain that worsened each month, the fatigue that crept up more often, the slight weight gain that made workouts more frequent and punishing in order to obtain minimal results, the sex drive that at times just wasn’t anywhere to be found…all of these are signals that our hormones are starting to shift and we are moving toward Menopause.
Now how in the world do you figure out where you are in the process? Good question! And yes-we’ve got the answer!
